Preface
Conceptual Self- Portrait of Ved Nayar
I studied art in western art curriculum based British type of Art institution in India. To draw/ paint a portrait, the model was made to sit in front of you. To draw/ paint a self- portrait, you kept a looking glass in front of you.
In the traditional Indian method of drawing/ painting & drawing & painting of self- portrait, concept of ‘Sthai Bhava’ was followed. For example, an artist saw & experienced a mango tree for all the four seasons – during autum when the mango leaves fell, during the the spring, when the new delicate leaves started to appear & grow, summer, when the mango tree flowered & small baby mangoes started appearing & rainy season, when the mangoes ripened & were tasted & eaten. Out this cumulative experience the artist painted the Mango tree. He did not sit before the mango tree to paint it. This painted mango tree had in it Mango tree’s physical & other characteristic internal & spiritual qualities in it.
Similarly. The artist did not keep in front of him a mirror to paint his ‘Sthai Bhava’ self portrait. The artist relied on his experience with self to draw/ paint his self portrait.
In this book are the Conceptual Self-Portraits of Ved Nayar.
